Volkswagen may develop electric analogues of Passat and Phaeton

Volkswagen

Volkswagen will develop two electric sedans, one of which will become the flagship of the brand and impose competition on the Tesla Model S, the second will be the successor to the Passat. It is reported by the publication Motor1.

The first of two new products is a serial successor to the I.D. Vizzion presented at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. It can replace the current Passat model. The second will become the ideological successor to the Phaeton executive sedan discontinued in 2016 and will compete with the Tesla Model S.

Both electric cars will be based on the upgraded MEB proprietary electric modular platform, which became the basis for the ID.3 hatchback and ID.4 crossover (their production has been launched this year). Volkswagen decided to abandon the prospects for using the more progressive PPE bogie developed by Audi-Porsche, as this will negatively affect the cost of models.

In branded dealerships of the brand (probably, we are talking about the markets of China, the USA and Europe), the Passat changer will appear in 2023, Phaeton - even later. Automotive News, citing a source close to VW board member Stefan Weil, reports that production of a large electric car could begin in Wolfsburg by 2025, although assembly in the US or China is not ruled out.
