American Tesla is testing the ground for the possibility of building a plant in India to produce electric vehicles and batteries. This was reported by Reuters, citing an anonymous source with direct knowledge of the company's negotiations.
According to the source, Tesla executives visited India this week, where they talked with representatives of local authorities. The talks focused on the nuances of Indian legislation on which the launch of the plant depends. The search for local suppliers of components and plans for production were also discussed.
It is assumed that the products of the future enterprise will be oriented both to the Indian market and for export.
A year ago, Tesla abandoned plans to sell its cars in this country. At that time, the company had an unsuccessful dialogue with the Indian authorities, demanding to reduce high taxes on imported cars, which reach 100% of their value and are among the highest in the world. Indian officials were interested in localizing production in their country, but Tesla intended to test the interest of local consumers in imported cars.
