Subaru unveiled its first mainstream electric car

Subaru

Subaru held an online presentation of the Solterra electric crossover, which should be the company's first such car.

The name Solterra is derived from two Latin words: sol (sun) and terra (earth). The novelty is very similar to the Toyota bZ4X electric crossover, and this is not just a coincidence: both cars are designed from scratch on the e-TNGA platform, created jointly by Subaru and Toyota for electric vehicles with front, rear or all-wheel drive.

Subaru Solterra and Toyota bZ4X are so identical that they even have the same wheels. But small differences in the exterior are still present. Subaru has different headlights (Toyota uses a body-color overlay, which is not here), plus a hexagonal grille panel and fog lights appeared in the front bumper. Other rear lights are used: they have small “outgrowths”, which is why the original tailgate panel is used.

All are identical in size. The total length of the body is 4690 mm, width - 1860 mm, height - 1650 mm. Solterra has a long wheelbase of 2850 mm, which provides a reserve of space in the second row, like D-class sedans.

In the interior, differences from Toyota are limited to the logo on the steering wheel and the color of the upholstery.

Solterra will be produced in two versions: with one and two electric motors. The front-wheel drive version has one 204 hp engine, and the all-wheel drive version has two 109 hp engines. (total 218 hp). Acceleration time 0-100 km / h is 8.4 and 7.7 seconds, respectively. The mass differs insignificantly: 1930 and 2020 kg.

Regardless of the number of engines, a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 71.4 kWh is used, covered from below with a steel sheet. The power reserve is 500 km for the front-wheel drive version and 460 km for the all-wheel drive version (WLTC test cycle). Supports fast charging up to 150 kW (up to 80% in 30 minutes). From the factory, the electric car can be equipped with wheels with a diameter of up to 20 inches.

Subaru Solterra will be a global model with sales starting in mid-2022. Prices have not yet been announced.
