Subaru says goodbye to iconic EJ20 engine

Subaru

The EJ20 boxer engine is a legend for all subarists - it has been produced since 1989. Over the years of production, many versions have been developed, both atmospheric and turbocharged. Power started from 125 hp. and sometimes exceeded 300. For 30 years it has been used on many models of the brand, today it is installed only on the Subaru Impreza WRX STI. But the days of the legend are numbered: the EJ20 will no longer be produced at the end of 2019. As a parting chord, the Japanese company will release a special version of the WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition sedan.

Subaru recalled that the EJ20 served well not only in civilian life, but also in sports - it was used as a basis for building power units for the WRC (World Rally Championship) and 24 Hours of Nürburgring cars.

The Subaru WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition is made in the traditional color combination for the model: the body is painted blue, 19-inch BBS wheels are golden. The look is diluted with cherry-colored stripes on the front grille and rear bumper. The car was equipped with 6-piston brakes. Recaro racing buckets included.

The company will release only 555 copies of the WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition. The number is symbolic, in the 90s the cars of the Subaru rally team wore this particular combination of numbers, since the State Express 555 cigarette brand was a key sponsor.

Today, boxer engines of other series are installed on Subaru cars. If we talk about 2.0-liter internal combustion engines, then these are FB20, FA20, as well as their derivatives.

Together with the farewell version of the EJ20, the Japanese company is going to introduce a slightly updated regular Impreza. She received new bumpers and modified lighting. An enlarged screen of the media system appeared inside. Just as importantly, Eyesight Touring Assist is now standard equipment, having previously been offered as an option. This security complex can automatically stop when an obstacle appears, monitors the markings and performs the function of adaptive cruise control.

The engines on the fresh Subaru Impreza will remain the same: "aspirated" volume of 1.6 (115 hp) and 2.0 liters (154 hp).

In addition to this, the Japanese brand will once again show the Subaru Viziv Adrenaline concept, which was first introduced back in the spring at the Geneva Motor Show. It is assumed that future models of the company will be made approximately in this style.
