Subaru refuses to release a new generation of WRX STI

Subaru

Subaru has decided not to release a new generation of the WRX STI sports sedan. At least, the model will not be released in its previous form, that is, with an internal combustion engine without a hybrid component. This is stated in a statement by the American division of the company.

"Subaru is exploring opportunities to develop the next generation WRX STI, including electrification," the press release reads.

The WRX STI is traditionally the most powerful car in the Japanese brand's lineup. Models WRX and WRX STI are based on the same version of the body, but differ in powertrains and suspension settings.

From fall 2021, Subaru has been producing the new generation WRX. The car is built on the basis of SGP (Subaru Global Platform) and is unified with the Subaru Levorg in the front part of the body. The WRX is equipped with a 2.4-liter FA24 petrol engine. It develops 275 hp. power and 350 Nm of torque.

Until the last moment, it was assumed that the WRX STI would be released before the end of 2022. With Subaru's announcement, it was obvious that this was not going to happen.

Note that in January 2022 at the Tokyo Auto Salon, the Japanese company introduced the WRX S4 STI Performance concept car, which was considered the harbinger of the serial WRX STI.
