New generation Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ sports car smashed in crash test

Subaru

The new generation Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ sports cars have been tested under the JNCAP protocol, the Japanese New Car Safety Assessment Program.

JNCAP tests include:

frontal impact at 64 km / h with an overlap of 40%;
frontal impact at 56 km/h with 100% overlap;
side impact;
bench tests of seats (imitation of a rear impact);
pedestrian safety test;
checking preventive safety systems, including automatic emergency braking.
For passive safety, the GR86/BRZ earned 86.38 points out of 100 possible, which corresponds to a rating of B (“good”). But in terms of preventive safety functions, the machines failed - 2 points out of 82 possible, grade E (“failed”). There is no automatic emergency braking system in the basic equipment of sports cars, so here it is 0 points out of 8. The overall result of the GR86 / BRZ was 88.38 points out of 190 possible, which corresponds to two stars out of five.

JNCAP experts emphasized that in the standard configuration, the GR86 / BRZ have a manual gearbox, with which the preventive safety complex is incompatible - which is why the model failed in this part of the test. The complex is installed only on versions with an automatic transmission, it has not been tested.

JNCAP is organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation and Tourism of Japan and the National Automobile Safety Agency NASVA.

Recall that the new GR86 and BRZ have been produced since 2021, they are built on a single rear-wheel drive platform, completely unified in terms of bodywork and units. Relative to the GT86 / BRZ of the 2012 model, they have a 50% increased torsional rigidity of the body. The overall length of both sports cars is 4265 mm, they are equipped with a 2.4-liter boxer "aspirated" with a capacity of 235 hp, it is combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox or 6-band automatic transmission.
