The new Peugeot 308 was left without a digital instrument cluster due to a shortage of chips

The global shortage of semiconductor chips continues to complicate the work of automakers - the Stellantis concern announced that it will temporarily abandon digital instrument clusters on the new Peugeot 308. All cars of this model will be equipped with traditional analog dashboards until the end of problems with the supply of chips, reports Reuters.

“This is a graceful and flexible way for automakers to get around the “crisis” with chips,” the news agency quoted a Stellantis spokesman as saying.

Earlier, for the same reason, the concern was forced to unscheduledly stop the production of Peugeot 308 at a plant in Sochaux (France). The 308th will be equipped with analogue instruments from May, and buyers will be given a discount of 400 euros from the original price. At the same time, Stellantis will keep digital combinations on most popular models, including the Peugeot 3008 crossover.

In recent months, chip shortages have forced many automakers, including giants such as Ford and Volkswagen, to halt production of cars.

Recall that several factors contributed to the shortage of semiconductor microcircuits: a) an unexpectedly fast recovery in demand for these components from automakers after the end of the “coronavirus crisis”, b) an increase in sales of computers and laptops due to the mass transition of people to remote work, c) a major fire at the Asahi Kasei Microdevices plant, one of the largest chip manufacturers, in October 2020.

Stellantis is a joint concern of FCA (FIAT-Chrysler) and PSA (Peugeot-Citroen), registered in early 2021.

The new generation Peugeot 308 hatchback was introduced in March.
