Opel has unveiled the second-generation Mokka subcompact crossover. The car received a new platform and a striking design.
Since the German automaker has been owned by the PSA Peugeot-Citroen concern since 2017, the French CMP chassis was used as the base for the new Mocchi - it previously created the Peugeot 2008 and DS3 Crossback crossovers, the latest Corsa, the best car of 2020 Peugeot 208 and some other models. Thus, Opel continues to consistently get rid of the platforms and units of the former owner - the General Motors concern. Recall that the previous Mokka was based on the GM Gamma II chassis.
The transition to CMP greatly changed the size of the German crossover. Relative to the old generation, the novelty is 125 mm shorter, that is, it has 4155 mm from nose to tail. At the same time, the wheelbase of the car is 2 mm longer and reaches 2557 mm. The front overhang has been shortened by 61mm and the rear overhang by 66mm, making it easier to maneuver and park in tight spaces. The width has not changed much - 1785 mm (+10 mm).
Thanks to the preservation of the wheelbase and a more dense layout of the units, the useful volume of the interior of the new Mokka is no less than that of its predecessor. Even the volume of the trunk has been preserved - 350 liters. Body rigidity is increased by 30%, while curb weight is reduced by as much as 120 kg.
The body of the new Opel is completely original; The headlights are combined into one visual element with the help of a horizontal bar - this is a reference to the old Opels of the 70s: however, they had a false radiator grille between the headlights, and here it is a glossy panel behind which the adaptive cruise control radar is hidden. The horizontal composition was given the name Opel Vizor, in the future other Opels will receive the same design of the front end. Note that vizor is translated as “helmet visor” - this style decision should evoke such associations. And also pay attention to the unusual two-tone color scheme - not only the roof, but also the hood has a contrasting shade.
In the cabin, the main thing is the elongated Pure Panel, which combines two widescreen displays (the diagonal of the screen in front of the driver's eyes is 12 inches). To make the motorist less distracted from the road, Opel designers have provided the most intuitive control of the system. The main functions are still controlled by buttons, so that you do not have to look for the desired function in the menu while driving.
The new Mokka will be equipped as standard with matrix LED headlights, one with 14 elements each, the light beam of each is automatically adjusted depending on driving conditions. Also, by default, the car will receive adaptive cruise control, a lane control function, a rear-view camera with a 180-degree view.
The crossover will be offered with a line of three-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, their volume and characteristics are not specified. But it is indicated that immediately from the moment of release, the Mokka-e version will also become available - this is a pure electric car. The power of its motor is 100 kW (136 hp), the torque is 260 Nm, the battery capacity is 50 kWh. The power reserve on one charge at Mokka-e is up to 322 km on the WLTP cycle. Top speed is limited to 150 km/h to save energy. At the fast charging station, the battery can be charged from 0 to 80% in 30 minutes. The batteries will be guaranteed for eight years.
