New Opel Astra unveiled: French platform and cool design

Opel

Concern Stellantis introduced the compact Opel Astra of the new, sixth generation (it is denoted by the letter L). The five-door hatchback remained the basic modification for the family, the station wagon will be shown later.

This is the first Astra created on the PSA platform, based on the EMP2 base, which is used for a whole “brood” of Peugeot and Citroen models: 308, 508, 3008, 4008, 5008, C4, C5 Aircross and others. Recall that the PSA concern bought Opel from the General Motors holding in 2017, and at the beginning of 2021, PSA entered into an alliance with FIAT-Chrysler, thus forming Stellantis. Astra of the outgoing generation K also relied on GM chassis and units.

The length and width of the new Astra are 4.37 and 1.86 m, respectively, the distance from the "nose" to the "tail" relative to the car of the previous model has not changed. The wheelbase is 2.68m, 13mm longer than its predecessor.

The design of the model is made in the new Opel brand paradigm: “clean” forms, tense lines, and in front - the Opel Vizor composition, that is, visually combined into a single element using a horizontal headlight bar (the bar is both a radiator grille and a panel behind which hide radar and sensors of the semi-autopilot system). For a surcharge, buyers will be able to order especially efficient matrix headlights, consisting of 168 LED elements (84 per part), the light beam of each of the elements adapts to current road conditions for the best illumination of the road.

In the cabin, the main fundamental innovation is a digital instrument cluster in standard equipment and a media system screen interfaced with it. The same solution is used on other Opels of the latest wave, including the new Mokka.

The range of engines for the European Union is declared as follows:

1.2-liter petrol turbo engine with 110 or 130 hp optionally,
1.5-liter turbodiesel with 110 hp,
plug-in hybrid installation, including a 1.6-liter petrol turbo, an electric motor on the front axle and a battery under the rear seat, with a total power of 180 or 225 hp. at the choice of the consumer.
The plug-in hybrid can travel up to 60 km on pure electric power.

Classic internal combustion engines are combined with a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-band "automatic". The hybrid means only an eight-speed "automatic".
