The American concern General Motors and the Japanese Honda Motor signed an agreement on April 5 to jointly develop a new family of mass-produced low-cost electric vehicles.
The first vehicles created under the partnership will enter the market after 2027. The family is expected to include electric vehicles in a variety of form factors, including crossovers. They will use the next generation GM Ultium unified traction battery.
The companies intend to share the costs of designing new cars, developing technologies for their production, and in addition, they will create a single pool of suppliers of parts for them. GM and Honda intend to develop common standards for electric vehicles.
The next generation of GM Ultium battery packs will be based on solid state technology - this will increase their efficiency and reduce weight.
The GM/Honda range of electric vehicles will be global and will be offered to emerging markets such as South America and China.
