Ford Mondeo will leave Europe, but in China it will be replaced by a new generation

Ford Motor Concern has announced that it will cease production and sales of the mid-size Mondeo family in Europe. The last copy of the European-style Mondeo will be assembled in March 2022, there will be no replacement for it.

This decision is due to a change in consumer preferences - European consumers are no longer interested in mid-size sedans and station wagons, first of all they are attracted to crossovers.

In 2020, 39% of all Fords sold in the Old World were crossovers and SUVs, a spokesman for the concern said in an interview with the authoritative British publication Autocar. The specialist illustrated the dynamics of the decline in public interest in the Mondeo with the situation in the UK - the first generation Mondeo in 1994 found 127,000 buyers in this country, the family of the current, fifth generation in Foggy Albion by the end of 2020 was sold in the amount of only 2400 units.

At the same time, on March 25, Ford announced the imminent presentation of the next generation Mondeo, but, firstly, this is not an ordinary passenger car, and secondly, Europe will not receive a novelty.

The sixth generation Mondeo will be presented at the end of April at the Shanghai International Motor Show, and the model is also planned to be produced and sold in China. It is expected that in the new generation of Mondeo, only the name will be related to its predecessors, and the form factor will become completely different: instead of large sedans, station wagons and liftbacks, this name will be assigned to a mid-size crossover. The model will be produced by the Changan-Ford joint venture. The network has a promotional photo announcing the new product, as well as a couple of unofficial shots of the prototype - outside and inside.

Recall that the first generation Mondeo was released in 1993, shortly after the release, the model won the title of “Best Car in Europe in 1994”. In Russia, the fourth and fifth generation Mondeo were produced at the Ford plant in Vsevolozhsk, bearing factory codes CD345 and CD391, respectively. Ford Motor left the Russian car market in 2019.
