Ford Motor held the world premiere of a brand new model - a compact crossover Explorer EV with a purely electric propulsion system. The model was created on the German platform Volkswagen MEB, which, in principle, does not involve the use of internal combustion engines. Ford and VW have been actively cooperating since 2019, they have many joint projects.
With the introduction of the new crossover, Ford has turned the Explorer name into a sub-brand, similar to what happened with the Bronco and Mustang before. The traditional five-meter Explorer in petrol and hybrid versions is not going anywhere, it will continue to be produced.
In terms of wheelbase, the new electric Ford coincides with the single-rooted Volkswagen ID.4 - 2.77 m, but noticeably shorter in length - 4.45 m (for ID.4 - 4.58 m). Explorer EV width - 1.87 m (for ID.4 - 1.85 m), height - 1.60 m (for ID.4 - 1.64 m). Ford's body is completely original - with more squat proportions.
Explorer EV will be released in three versions:
with one electric motor and rear-wheel drive with a capacity of 170 hp,
with one electric motor and rear-wheel drive with a capacity of 286 hp,
with two electric motors and all-wheel drive, power - 340 hp
The top version accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 6 seconds, the maximum speed for all options is limited at 180 km / h.
The machine will be offered with a 77kWh lithium-ion battery, with a lower-capacity variant possibly available in the future. The power reserve on one full charge is up to 500 km.
The trunk volume of the car is 450 liters, if you fold the rear seat backs - a little over 1400 liters.
The main feature in the cabin is a huge 14.6-inch vertical display of the SYNC Move media system. This screen can be rotated 30 degrees - behind it is a 2-liter compartment for especially valuable items.
Production of the Ford Explorer EV will be located in Germany, at a plant in Cologne. The target market is the European Union, the price there will be 45,000 euros.
