BYD wants to buy one of its largest auto plants in Europe from Ford

Ford

One of Ford Motor's main auto plants in the EU could be sold to China's BYD Auto, as the parties prepare to discuss a potential deal, according to The Wall Street Journal.

We are talking about a factory in Sarlui in southwestern Germany. This site has been operating since 1970, from 1998 to the present, Ford Focus has been produced on it in the specification for Europe, the plant's capacity is about 350 thousand cars a year.

Ford in recent years has been carrying out a deep restructuring of its business in the Old World, its goal is to switch factories to the production of electric vehicles, but it fails to integrate the plant in Zarlui into the new strategy, so back in June 2022 the company decided to significantly reduce the staff of the enterprise, which has 4600 people.

BYD is interested in the site because it wants to use it to supply its vehicles to the EU market - plug-in hybrids and pure electric vehicles.
