Volvo Cars has shared a photo of the Recharge concept, which is a harbinger of a new generation of electric vehicles. The first-born of this series will be the third-generation XC90 crossover, the harbinger of which was Recharge.
The spectacular appearance of the concept car was created under the guidance of Volvo Cars chief designer Robin Page, in the car the company's specialists sought to reflect the philosophy of the famous Scandinavian design, it is characterized by simplicity, conciseness and functionality at the same time.
Since the layout of the car is no longer limited by the need to install an internal combustion engine under the hood, this freed the hands of engineers and designers - note how unusually long the wheelbase is made relative to the body. Thanks to this, boarding and disembarking became easier, as well as increased space in the cabin. The body is optimized from an aerodynamic point of view. Organized additional storage areas (in particular, between the front seats).
Some heirloom features were carried over from existing Volvo models: the Thor's hammer-shaped daytime running lights and L-shaped taillights were retained.
A lidar from Luminar is provided on the roof. This device scans the surrounding area for autopilot operation. The NVIDIA processor will be responsible for processing the information.
The length, width and height of the concept car were not disclosed.
It is clear that some features of the Volvo Recharge will be simplified when "converted" to the production model. This applies to the rear doors that open against the direction of travel: they look interesting on the concept and, given the missing central roof pillar, provide a wide entrance to the cabin, but such a solution will not reach the conveyor.
Today, the Swedes have two electric cars: the XC40 Recharge and the C40 Recharge. Both are built on the CMA platform, which was originally developed for cars with internal combustion engines. The third-generation Volvo XC90 will be the first model built on a fully electric bogie. This means that there will be no more petrol and diesel versions of the XC90. Of the technical characteristics, only the maximum power reserve is known so far - 1000 km.
The next Volvo XC90 is slated for release in 2022.
