Volvo has developed an inflatable child car seat weighing less than 5 kg

Volvo has developed a car child seat using a conceptually new technology - it is a lightweight inflatable structure that is installed against the direction of the car.

The seat design is based on an innovative system that inflates the seat in less than 40 seconds. A built-in pump is also used to remove air. The total weight of the seat is less than 5 kg - half the weight of modern child seats. What's more, the seat is permanently connected to the car via Bluetooth wireless technology, which gives you access to a wide range of functions, including remote air inflation. When folded, this seat fits easily in a bag along with other baby accessories.

When creating a prototype seat, a durable material with special stitching was used, which can withstand high internal pressure. This material is often used for rigging yachts and was originally developed by the military when there were plans for inflatable aircraft.

An inflatable child seat is easy to install against the direction of travel - this is the safest way to transport children in a car, as it minimizes the load on the child's neck, especially under the age of 3-4 years, in a frontal collision.

Volvo expects that the new concept will expand the possibilities of using a child seat. For example, it will be convenient for grandparents who help new parents, but are not able to lift weights. Such a seat can be used without problems in a taxi, a rented car or even on a bus, where previously parents had to rely only on available safety equipment.
