Volvo Cars recalls 200,000 vehicles over safety issues

Volvo

Volvo Cars is recalling 194,546 vehicles from 2000-2007. Cause: When the driver's side airbag is deployed in an accident, its inflator can collapse into dangerous fragments and injure a person. The risk of such a scenario is especially high if the machine has been operated for a long time in conditions of high humidity, heat or sudden changes in temperature.

The campaign covered the V70 (station wagon) and XC70 (crossover) models built from February 22, 2000 to May 4, 2007. On machines, a defective airbag will be replaced free of charge. The recall only applies to North America. To date, one case has been recorded in which the driver was killed by fragments of an exploding inflator.

In early October, the company recalled 460,769 2000-2009 S80 and S60 models worldwide for the same reason.

Oddly enough, the systems are not made by the Japanese company Takata, which became infamous due to a similar defect, airbags for Volvo Cars were supplied by the German ZF.
