Japanese students build a five-door Suzuki Jimny

Suzuki

While Suzuki hesitates to release a five-door version of the current-generation Suzuki Jimny subcompact SUV JB74W, students at the Nihon Automotive Technology School (NATS) decided to take the initiative. They are in full swing preparing their version of the stretched Jimny, with completion scheduled for January 2022.

The length of the car was increased by 400 mm, that is, it is now 3950 mm. To do this, I had to cross-cut the body and frame spars - and weld “inserts” into them. Rear doors made using bypass technologies were hung on the body. The front seats have retained their attachment points, while the rear seats have been pushed back slightly to increase legroom.

Along the way, students prepare Jimny for off-road: they installed large wheels with an extended track, a power front bumper and made improvements to the suspension.

It will not do without changes under the hood: a 1.5-liter gasoline engine will be equipped with a turbocharger.

The finished project will be presented at the Tokyo Tuning Exhibition (Tokyo Auto Salon 2022), which will be held from January 14 to 16.

Later in 2022, Suzuki will release an official five-door version of the Jimny. The car will also be sold in Japan, although India should become the main market.
