On July 16, the Mercedes-Benz concern held a presentation in Berlin of a new generation of smart compact cars - a two-seater fortwo and a four-seater forfour. These vehicles have been developed in close cooperation with Renault and are very similar to the Geneva premiere of the Renault Twingo.
smart fortwo retained the same body length of 2.69 m and a rear-engine layout, but became 10 cm wider. At the same time, the compact has become even more maneuverable: its turning circle is a record 6.95 m (from curb to curb). The car, as well as forfour, will be offered in three stylistically different equipment levels - passion, prime and proxy.
For the first time after the start of production, the base engine for the new smart models will be a 999 cc 3-cylinder petrol unit. Its performance is 71 hp. and 91 Nm, and a good torque is already provided at 1000 rpm. The top will be the 898 cc turbo engine, already known from the Twingo (90 hp, 135 Nm). When the first excitement subsides and the queues in the salons decrease, smart will present the most budget option with a 60-horsepower engine.
There will be two transmissions to choose from: a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed "robot" with two clutches, which is called twinamic.
Smart promises that prices for fortwo will remain the same, while forfour will cost about 600 euros more. Sales in the European market will start in November.
