Smart again dreams of its compact crossover

Smart

The French company Smart, which has been a joint venture between Daimler AG and Geely since 2019, has unveiled the Smart Concept #1 show car, which sheds light on what the brand's first production crossover will be.

The car is unusually large for Smart, its overall length, width and height are 4290, 1910 and 1698 mm, respectively, the wheelbase is 2750 mm. This is a five-door compact crossover with an unusual minimalist design. The car does not have an aggregate connection with Daimler AG - Concept # 1 relies on the CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platform jointly developed by Geely and its Volvo Cars. The base is used in a purely electric configuration, as on the Volvo XC40 Recharge. In what performance the Smart electric crossover will be offered in mass production is not specified, but on the XC40 Recharge the platform is all-wheel drive, with two motors, one per axle.

Serial production of the Smart crossover will start within a couple of years, obviously, the design of a commodity car will be much simpler.

Recall that Smart dreamed of its crossover back in the zero years - in 2005, the company presented a demonstration sample of the compact Smart Formore, which, however, did not go into production.

Right now, Smart only makes the Fortwo, Fortwo Carbio and Forfour urban subcompact electric vehicles.
