Skoda will be responsible for all new models on the cheapest Volkswagen platform

The Volkswagen Group has made an important internal decision - from now on, Skoda Auto is responsible for the development of all new models on the MQB-A0 platform. The Czechs will create cars on it both under their own brand and under the Volkswagen brand, in addition, the further development of this aggregate base is also delegated to Skoda.

The MQB-A0 is a chassis for low cost vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines (i.e. no electrical installation is expected). The target markets for cars on the new base in the Volkswagen press service are India, Africa, the countries of Southeast Asia, Latin America. The concern believes that car sales in these regions will continue to grow rapidly - in total they will add 58% until 2030.

Skoda Auto has been responsible for all Volkswagen activities in Russia, India and North Africa for the past few years, so the concern is not afraid to delegate additional responsibility to the Czechs.

The latest innovations on this base are the subcompact crossovers Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun, produced so far only in India. In addition, a 4.5-meter Skoda Slavia sedan, created on the same platform, is on the way.

The creation of new models based on the MQB-A0 will, firstly, preserve the existing staff of the scientific and technical division of Skoda Auto, and secondly, it will require the recruitment and cultivation of new specialists. This is especially important amid earlier fears expressed in the Czech Republic that the transition to the production of electric vehicles will force Skoda Auto to reduce its staff.
