Nissan reveals next-generation semi-automatic pilot

Nissan Motor is developing a new set of driver assistance systems that are more efficient than existing systems and radically reduce the risk of getting into an accident.

To monitor the surrounding space, a high-performance new-generation lidar fr om Luminar, radar and cameras are used. The system with high accuracy determines the shape of objects, the distance to them, and also reads the environment, including the movement of neighboring cars along the stream. Based on this data, the computer non-stop assesses the situation and, in the event of a danger, automatically performs the necessary actions to prevent collisions: maneuvers the car and / or slows it down. The control system is being developed with the participation of the American company Applied Intuition.

Nissan noted that the most important component of the system is lidar, that is, an active optical sensor that emits laser beams while driving. Its advantage is the ability to build an accurate 3D model of the surrounding space at a distance of up to 300 meters. Traditional disadvantages include high cost and bulkiness. In the presented prototype, the lidar is installed on the roof of the Nissan Skyline (the sedan is sold as the Infiniti Q50 in export markets). Now work is underway on miniaturization and cost reduction of lidar.

The press service of the Japanese company noted that although the system relies on data from highly detailed terrain maps, it will also be able to work in areas wh ere they are not available.

So far, Nissan has not specified which models will be the first to receive the advanced system. On production cars, it is predicted to be introduced in the mid-2020s; from 2030, almost all new Nissan cars will be equipped with such a complex.

Recall that today Nissans, including those manufactured in Russia, are equipped with the ProPilot semi-autopilot. It includes intelligent cruise control, automatic braking in the city and on the highway, lane control. When the complex is activated, the driver must continue to control the car without removing his hands from the steering wheel, and be ready to take control if the system does not work. ProPilot works on the basis of data from cameras and radar, it does not include lidar.
