Nissan Motor will remove the March subcompact hatchback from its product line for Japan in the coming months, Kyodo newspaper reported, citing its sources in the company. There will be no replacement for the car in the Land of the Rising Sun, the reason is the fallen demand for March.
The current March K13 has been produced since 2010, the model is delivered to Japan ready-made from the Nissan plant in Thailand, the car is offered only in the body of a “five-door hatchback” with a length of just over 3.8 m. In parallel, the model is produced in six more countries, in most markets of its presence known as the Nissan Micra.
According to Kyodo, the last March units in the specification for the Japanese have already rolled off the assembly line in Thailand, so they are now selling off stock. For other markets, the Micra K13 will continue to be produced.
According to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association (JADA), only 8.8 thousand of these hatchbacks were sold in Japan in 2021. For comparison, a slightly larger Note was sold in the amount of 90 thousand last year.
March is another victim of Nissan Motor's business recovery program. Recall, last week it became known that the company will discontinue production of the Rogue Sport compact crossover (Qashqai for the North American market) without replacement.
The Japanese automaker is cutting costs in the name of reconfiguring into one of the world's largest electric car makers. Until 2030, Nissan expects to release 15 new purely electric models.
March has been present in the Nissan range since 1982; in Japan, a total of 2.57 million cars of four generations have been sold over 40 years.
