Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S regains Nürburgring record

Mercedes-Benz

The upd ated Porsche Panamera Turbo S se t the Nürburgring record just a few months ago, in August. Then the German liftback was ahead of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S. Now Mercedes has taken revenge and once again became the fastest four-door car on the planet.

Mercedes-AMG engineer Demian Schaffert, driving a 639-horsepower 4x4 sedan with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, completed a 20.8 km lap in 7:27.80, the best ever for a production four-door car. On a shorter (20.6 km) lap, the car showed a time of 7:23.00.

Why two results? The fact is that in 2019 the Nürburgring Directorate (Nürburgring 1927 GmbH & Co. KG) introduced a new method for measuring lap times. According to the rules, the stopwatch starts and stops at the same point at the 13th turn as before, but the length of the track has increased by 232 meters (from 20.6 to 20.83 km). To avoid confusion, manufacturers are now trying to publish two results at once.

The car was equipped with the optional AMG Aerodynamics package for improved stability, bucket seats and four-point seat belts.

Formally, Mercedes claims leadership in the luxury car segment. The catch is that the Jaguar XE Project 8 sedan drove the track even faster - in 7:18.361. But since the rear seats were removed from the Jaguar's cabin to reduce weight, its result is out of the standings.
