Toyota Motor held the world premiere of the new (third) generation Lexus GX SUV.
The design of the novelty is based on a modified version of the TNGA GA-F frame platform, already used on the new full-size Toyota Land Cruiser 300 and Lexus LX, as well as the Toyota Tundra pickup truck and the Toyota Sequoia SUV.
The size of the Lexus GX has grown significantly. The overall length, width and height of the model are 4950, 1980 and 1870 mm respectively, the wheelbase is 2850 mm.
The exterior of the model was made according to the latest "off-road" fashion - in the most brutal way, with references to classic SUV styling solutions. In particular, here is a two-volume profile with a long horizontal hood and a slight slope of the windshield, while the glass itself is made almost flat. Massive proportions, a “step” of the window line, “hexagonal” wheel arches, large side mirrors and a roof visually separated from the rest of the body by a black horizontal line look interesting.
The engine range of the new Lexus GX:
3.5-litre V6 V35A-FTS twin-turbocharged petrol and 10-speed automatic transmission,
"parallel hybrid" installation, consisting of a 2.4-liter gasoline T24A-FTS, an 8-speed automatic transmission, an electric motor.
In the specification for the USA and Canada, the first version is indexed GX550, whether this will be used in other markets is not specified. The GX550 has 349 hp. and torque - 650 Nm. The maximum weight of the towed trailer is 3629 kg. The characteristics of the hybrid variant have not yet been disclosed.
There are no plans to offer V8 for the new GX.
The drive in all cases is permanent all-wheel drive, with a Torsen self-locking center differential, a forced locking of the rear center differential and a lowering row in the transfer case.
The front suspension is independent spring - on double wishbones, like the car of the outgoing sample, they are stamped. The rear suspension is dependent spring, with a continuous axle.
The dimensions of the wheels, depending on the configuration, are 18, 20 or 22 inches.
The cabin configuration at the choice of the buyer can be five-, seven- or six-seater. In the latter case, individual seats of increased comfort are installed on the second row.
Salon with angular forms of the front panel clearly refers to the cars of the 80s. The instrument panel is fully digital, the screen size of the media system is an impressive 14 inches.
The standard version of the GX has a 26-degree approach angle and 23-degree exit and ramp angles. But they will also offer performance for extreme off-road - Overtrail. It has tires with an outer diameter of 33 inches as standard, protection of units with aluminum sheets, as well as E-KDSS active anti-roll bar technology - they can be “dissolved” on the road to improve patency, and on the highway, on the contrary, they can be “clamped” for reduce roll and improve handling.
In the body structure, to increase its torsional rigidity in the doorways, the number of welding points has been increased, adhesives have been additionally used in the interface between the cross members and the floor, and the rear part has been reinforced with a spacer. The internal elements of the sidewalls are stamped from high-strength steel, the hood is made of aluminum.
The steering uses electric power steering, which reduces "the amount of unnecessary information transmitted to the driver about the road surface."
Production of the "third" Lexus GX will be carried out at the Toyota Tahara plant in Japan, sales will start in early 2024.
In a couple of months, the new generation Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUV, as unified as possible with the GX, will be presented.
The outgoing Lexus GX J150 has been produced with upgrades since 2009 - it is equipped with 4.6 or 4.0 liter gasoline engines. The power of the first is 288-301 hp. (depending on the sales market), the second - 271 hp The 4.6-liter modification is global, the 4.0-liter is only for China.
