The battle of American sports cars: Mustang, Camaro and Challenger against... the wall!

Dodge

The American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducted crash tests of modern sports cars Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger. None of these vehicles won an award from the organization, and some were tested to the brink of failure.

The IIHS argues that sports cars are traditionally at risk - they are hit more often and the payments for accidents with their participation are high, since such cars are taken for dynamic driving.

Each of the three cars was tested against five parameters: barrier impacts with 25- and 40-percent overlaps, side impact, roof strength, and the effectiveness of head restraints and seat belts.

In most of the tests, the sports cars performed well, but in the most difficult test - hitting the 25 percent barrier - there were differences.

The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro proved to be the most modern of the tested cars from the best side. The power structure of the body withstood the impact and did not allow significant deformation - the risk of leg injuries was minimal.

The Mustang showed the results a little worse - the dashboard and door hinges moved strongly into the passenger compartment upon impact, the roof was wrinkled. But the overall risk of injury is low.

The Dodge Challenger, which is also the oldest car of all tested, has the lowest scores. The space around the driver was greatly reduced, the dummy's leg was completely clamped, and the ankle was badly damaged. To remove the mannequin, the foot had to be unscrewed.
