New BYD Lithium Ion Batteries Will Be Hammerable

BYD

One of the traditional disadvantages of lithium-ion batteries used for electric vehicle batteries is low security. In case of overheating or mechanical damage, there is a high risk of fire or even explosion. But BYD says that with their new development, these problems will be a thing of the past.

The new development is called Blade Battery. The company's engineers spent several years creating this battery, which is about twice as compact as conventional traction batteries. But more importantly, BYD is reporting a significant increase in ultimate loads.

One of the stress tests was the hammering of nails. An ordinary lithium-ion battery heated up to 200-400 degrees Celsius during this procedure. The lithium-iron-phosphate battery reached 500 degrees at all. At the same time, Blade Battery, even during these executions, remained "como cool": its temperature during the experiments never exceeded 60 degrees. The character is calm, Nordic.

Based on this data, BYD concludes that the Blade Battery is much less susceptible to mechanical ignition. The experimental battery was also subjected to other tortures: bent, sawed, heated in an oven to 300 degrees and recharged by 260%. Engineers have never managed to get fire in this way.

BYD representatives noted that today battery manufacturers are obsessed with increasing energy density, but they do not always care about safety. Cases of electric vehicle fires, especially as a result of road accidents, are not so rare. At the same time, quite often they cannot be extinguished even by firefighters.

BYD vice president He Long said some auto companies have already shown interest in Blade Battery. He did not specify which brand could be the first to receive this development. As for its own models, the first-born BYD will be the Han EV sedan. In the basic version, the car will be equipped with a 218 hp rear electric motor, the twin-engine version will be able to develop 268 hp, and the range is expected to be around 450 km.
