Within a year and a half, a serial full-size frame electric SUV of the superlux class will appear in the range of the Chinese BYD Auto. The prototype of this car under the name Yangwang U8 was shown at a special event held on January 5th.
The exterior of the Yangwang U8 is characterized by a classic two-volume profile with a pronounced horizontal hood, an angular “cabin” and swollen plastic wings. Double-deck headlights and a grille-like panel with a three-dimensional chrome pattern make up a complex one-piece composition. Retractable door handles and pixelated taillights also draw attention. The unusual appearance of the car was developed under the guidance of the German Wolfgang Egger, who in different years worked as the chief designer of SEAT, Alfa Romeo, as well as the head of the design department of the Audi Group and the chief designer of Volkswagen. Egger has been working at BYD since 2017.
The overall length of the Yangwang U8 is 5300 mm, the wheelbase is 3050 mm. In other words, this car is comparable in size to the latest generation Chevrolet Tahoe. U8 tires are 275/60 R20.
The BYD SUV is built on the Yi Sifang frame platform, which, in principle, does not involve the use of internal combustion engines and only allows the use of purely electrical installations. U8 is equipped with four electric motors - one per wheel. The power of each engine is 220-240 kW (299-326 hp), torque - 320-420 Nm, total output - over 1100 hp. and 1600 Nm. From standstill to 100 km / h, the brutal SUV accelerates in 3 seconds, i.e. dynamics comparable to the best supercars. It is claimed that the computer automatically controls the traction of each of the motors, the distribution of torque between the wheels is 100 times faster than traditional all-wheel drive systems. There are preset driving modes, incl. for driving on ice, snow, desert slopes, wetlands, etc. It is even possible to drive with the condition of one punctured wheel - automation monitors tire pressure and, if necessary, automatically corrects the position of the body, in this state you can drive at speeds up to 120 km / h .
Among other things, the U8 is able to turn around on the spot - to perform this maneuver, the wheels of the two sides rotate in opposite directions.
The interior of the Yangwang U8 will be revealed at a later date, with "very large" instrument panel and media screen displays expected.
In mass production, Yangwang U8 will cost in China in the range of 800,000-1,500,000 yuan, depending on the configuration.
At the same time, BYD showed the concept supercar Yangwang U9, the appearance of which was also designed by Wolfgang Egger. This machine is equipped with the same power plant as the U8, but has a monocoque body, accelerates from 0-100 km / h in 2 seconds.
