General Motors to close seven factories in 2019

Buick

General Motors will carry out a large-scale restructuring of its business during 2019. The concern will close several factories and reduce staff. These measures will be taken as part of the corporate development strategy adopted in 2015, which is aimed at improving business efficiency.

In 2019, GM will stop the following production:

the Oshawa Assembly plant in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada;
the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant in Detroit;
the Lordstown Assembly plant in Warren, Ohio;
the Baltimore Operations engine plant in White Marsh, Maryland;
Warren Transmission Operations transmission plant in Warren, Michigan.
They will also be joined by two assembly plants outside the US (they will be reported separately).

The company does not cite the number of job cuts, but says that a total of 15% of employees and 25% of managers will be laid off. According to US media estimates, 15,000 people will be laid off in the United States.

It is expected that the savings from the closure of production in 2019 alone will be $6 billion.
