Artificial intelligence, which solves problems by analogy with existing algorithms, commonly referred to as a neural network, is now widely used where you need to quickly find a typical solution. For example, neural networks perform the function of call centers, generate melodies, texts, images, and can imitate various styles of painting. Obviously, manufacturers of industrial goods also use them in design, but traditional automakers, if they admitted this, were reluctant. Now it's not.
The use of neural networks in the design of their cars was told in BMW. According to Adrian Van Hooydonk, head of design at the company, the company uses neural networks to search for the appearance of rims: “You set some parameters - weight limit, size, how many spokes - and the computer generates ideas.”
At the same time, he emphasized that the neural network is used for a wide range of technical solutions, and a person, a professional designer, is responsible for the integrity of the product image, the development of style.
