BMW held the world premiere of the new generation 5-Series model, factory code G60/G61. Today they showed only the base car of the family - a sedan, within a few months a cargo-passenger station wagon will be released.
At the heart of the new “five” is the second-generation Cluster Architecture platform (CLAR II), its design initially “registered” the possibility of using almost any type of power plant - gasoline, diesel, hybrid or purely electric. That is, the maximum end-to-end unification of the chassis and body between various modifications has been achieved.
The exterior is a revolution: the designers moved away from the deliberate conservatism of the previous two generations and developed a fresh style in perception, the characteristic features of which are “clean” sidewalls, sharp punching edges, a falling back and recessed lift-type door handles. The rear pillars of the body are made visually thin - stylistically continuing the window line of corners-stubs work for this effect, they, however, make the “Hofmeister bend” less pronounced.
The next incarnation of the 5-Series is bigger than ever before. The overall length, width and height of the sedan are 5060, 1900 and 1515 mm, respectively, the wheelbase is 2995 mm. Relative to the model of the previous generation G30 / G31, the change in parameters was +97, +32, +36 and +20 mm. By the way, even the "seventh" series of the 90s (E38) in the standard version was shorter.
In the interior of the novelty, the digital instrument panel and the media system screen are made by two curved displays united by solid glass. The dimension of the first screen is 12.3 inches, the second one is 14.9. The physical iDrive controller was left in the cabin - in order to be able to intuitively control secondary functions and not be distracted by the touch screen. The rear seat backrest is folded in the ratio 40:20:40, the trunk volume is 490-530 liters (depending on modification).
The range of versions of the BMW 5-Series traditionally depends on the sales market.
In the European Union, the following versions will be available at launch:
520i - 2.0 liter petrol engine with 190 hp. + 48-volt starter-generator with a return of 18 hp, rear-wheel drive;
520d - turbodiesel 2.0 l, 197 hp + starter-generator 11 hp, rear-wheel drive;
i5 eDrive40 - pure electric car with a motor on the rear axle, power - 250 kW (340 hp), torque - 400 Nm (with activated Boost function - 430 Nm), rear-wheel drive;
i5 M60 xDrive - pure electric car, two electric motors, 601 hp, 795 Nm (820 Nm - with Boost), all-wheel drive.
Electric versions can travel 455-582 km on one full charge. i5 batteries hold a charge from a station with a capacity of 205 kW, it is possible to replenish the energy reserve from the level of 10% to 80% in 30 minutes.
Later, two plug-in hybrids 530e and 550e xDrive will be released - they combine a gasoline engine with an electric motor. The 530e has a total output of 299 hp. and rear-wheel drive, 550e - 489 hp and all-wheel drive. Both cars are equipped with a 19.4 kWh battery pack and the pure electric range of the hybrids is in the range of 97-102 km. The battery can be recharged from an external network.
In the EU, petrol and diesel versions with 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engines and a sports version of the M5 with a hybrid installation are also expected.
In North America, the novelty will be offered for the first time in modifications of 530i, 540i, i5 eDrive40 and i5 M60. The 530i is equipped with a 2.0-liter petrol turbo with 255 hp, the 540i is equipped with a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder turbo with 375 hp. The 530i is offered with rear or all-wheel drive, the 540i only with all-wheel drive. Electric versions are similar to European versions, adjusted for the adaptation of the design and power architecture to US requirements.
The most dynamic modification of the new "five" - i5 M60 xDrive, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.8 seconds, while the maximum speed is limited to 230 km / h. Of the options with internal combustion engines, the fastest is the 550e xDrive: acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h.
All versions with internal combustion engines are equipped with an 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission, as an option they will offer thrusters rear wheels (they are able to turn up to 2.5 degrees). With a steering axle, the turning circle of the huge sedan is a moderate 11.7 meters.
In Germany, the acceptance of orders for the new generation BMW 5-Series has already started, the price is from 54,600 euros. In the US, the sedan will cost from $57,900.
