Volkswagen will release SUVs under a forgotten American brand

Volkswagen

The German concern Volkswagen plans to release a range of large purely electric SUVs and pickups under the new Scout brand (Scout), reports The Wall Street Journal, citing its sources in the company.

Scout is a trademark with historical roots. This name was used for all-terrain vehicles of the American company International Harvester, produced in two generations in 1961-1980. Now this enterprise is called Navistar and is owned by Volkswagen through Traton, which unites the entire truck business of the concern. In addition to Navistar, Traton includes MAN, Scania, and Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus.

It is appropriate to recall that the Scout prefix also denoted the versions of the Skoda Fabia (in the second generation) and Skoda Octavia (in the second and third generations) prepared for light off-road use. Skoda Auto is also owned by the German concern.

According to the WSJ, the investment in the Scout electric SUV and pickup project will be $1 billion. They will be released in 2026 and will be produced in a circulation of 250,000 per year. The target market for Volkswagen's Scout will be North America, where the cars will have to compete with the Rivian R1T / R1S, Tesla Cybertruck, Ford F-150 Lightning, Chevrolet Silverado EV, etc.
