Toyota suspends sales of two models due to emissions fraud

Toyota

Toyota Motor announced the suspension of sales in Japan of two models in connection with the scandal with lowering the emissions, which further bogged down the concern's company Hino Motors.

A press release from Toyota states that Dyna and Toyoace light trucks with 2019 N04C turbodiesels (4.0 L) are temporarily unavailable for purchase in Japan. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan revealed that during the certification of this unit, exhaust measurements were carried out with a gross violation of the established methodology. As a result, the actual level of harmful substances in N04C combustion products is much higher than the declared one.

Toyota says Hino is responsible for the wrongdoing. Over 19,000 Dynas and Toyoaces will soon be recalled for design fixes.

Hino Chief Executive Officer Satoshi Ogiso said there was no justification for the disclosed rigging - the company has already developed measures to strengthen controls in order to prevent such fraud in the future.

The disclosed case of underreporting emissions of harmful substances is a continuation of the scandal that Hino fell into in March 2022. Then Japanese regulators revealed that Hino deliberately misrepresented the emission data of Hino N04C, A05C, A09C and E13C engines during certification. For this, a special muffler and motor firmware were used. True, that investigation concerned the events of 2016.
