Sports GR Corolla received an option for the Japanese domestic market

On June 1, Toyota Motor introduced the GR Corolla RZ and GR Corolla Morizou Edition sports hatchbacks - these are models for the Japanese domestic market. The first of these cars is the right-hand drive version of the GR Corolla, which debuted in April in left-hand drive. And the second car is an extreme modification without a rear sofa and with an increased torque motor, a world premiere.

The overall length, width and height of the GR Corolla RZ are 4410, 1850 and 1480 mm respectively, the wheelbase is 2640 mm, and the curb weight is 1470 kg.

The supporting body frame of the GR Corolla is almost identical to the original hatchback, but struts and additional reinforcements have been added between the rear wheel arches, near the central tunnel and under the floor to increase torsional rigidity. The high rigidity of the body increases the steering precision and improves the stability of the car when passing through sharp turns.

Under the hood is a 3-cylinder 1.6-liter G16E-GTS gasoline turbo engine with 304 hp. and a torque of 370 Nm. The engine is aggregated with a 6-speed "mechanics" and all-wheel drive. The transmission uses a multi-plate clutch, and between the wheels the thrust is transmitted by two Torsen limited slip differentials. Depending on preferences and operating conditions, the driver can adjust the distribution of torque along the axes in the ratio of 60:40, 50:50 and 30:70 (front:rear). Suspension scheme - MacPherson strut in front and double wishbones in the rear. Used original springs, shock absorbers and bushings.

From the original Corolla hatchback in the sports one, only the roof, doors and rear fenders are preserved from the outer body panels, all other elements are their own, and molded from composites.

In order to improve stability at high speeds, the front track has been widened by 60 mm (up to 1590 mm), the rear track by 85 mm (up to 1620 mm).

The wheel size of the sports Corolla is 235/40 R18, tires are Yokohama Advan Apex V601, forged wheels, BBS.

The Morizou Edition is the GR Corolla rendition for racing track enthusiasts. The rear sofa was dismantled from the car, that is, the interior is double. This decision allowed me to lose 30 extra pounds. The engine has been retuned, its torque has been increased by 30 Nm to 400 Nm. The gear ratios in the gearbox have been changed, and special single-tube suspension shock absorbers have been used. Also used are 245/40 R18 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. The Morizou Edition is said to be even faster through corners than the GR Corolla. At the same time, the special version also has a permit for public roads.

In Japan, sales of new products will start in the fall of 2022.
