Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi to launch 35 new EV models by 2030

Mitsubishi

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance has unveiled a 2030 business roadmap that includes expanding its range of electric vehicles, strengthening mutual product commonality, and focusing on new technologies for connected services and mobility. This strategy is developed as a continuation of the restructuring plan of the alliance called Renaulution, which was published a year and a half ago.

The main thing: in the French-Japanese alliance, the future of the automotive industry is associated with electric vehicles. The companies intend to jointly invest an additional 23 billion euros in this direction. To date, the alliance has invested 10 billion euros in the production of electric vehicles.

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi currently uses four joint platforms for purely electric cars, these are:

CMF-AEV (Dacia Spring/Renault City K-ZE),
Kei-EV (Nissan and Mitsubishi electric kei cars for the Japanese market),
LCV-EV (Renault Kangoo, Nissan Town Star),
CMF-EV (Nissan Ariya, Renault e-Megane).
By 2024, another platform will be released called CMFB-EV, which is described as the most highly competitive electric vehicle chassis in the world. The cars created on this basis are comparable in price to their gasoline counterparts.

The press service of the alliance claims that the cost of CMFB-EV will be 33% cheaper than the chassis of the Renault ZOE model, while the power of the electric motor will be 10% higher.

The alliance will increase the efficiency of cost management through deeper unification, sharing of factories, power plants and body frames.

Annually, 250,000 electric vehicles will be produced on this base, including the subcompact Renault R5 and the promising Nissan model that will replace the Micra. Cars will be able to drive up to 400 km on a single battery charge. Cars will be produced at the Renault ElectriCity plant, located in northern France. Also on this base will release an electric car Alpine.

Three companies plan to introduce 35 new models of electric vehicles by 2030, 90% will receive a unified chassis.

The second block is the battery strategy. The Alliance plans to use interchangeable battery packs on all its brands of electric vehicles - thus achieving greater economies of scale and, as a result, lower purchase prices.

The alliance will reduce the cost of batteries relative to the current level by 50% by 2026 and by 65% by 2028.

By 2030, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi's own battery production capacity will amount to 220 GWh.

Also in the interests of all members of the alliance, Nissan Motor is now developing innovative solid-state batteries that are more capacious and less expensive than the usual liquid lithium-ion batteries. Recharging time will be reduced by 2/3. The start of mass production of solid-state batteries is predicted for mid-2028.

The third block of the strategy is about connected services and autopilots. The Alliance Cloud digital cloud service will unite 26 million Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi car owners by 2026. The autonomous driving system will be developed on the basis of the Nissan ProPILOT system currently in use. In addition, Renault is developing a common electrical and electronic architecture for all cars of the alliance, which will be installed on cars in 2025. This architecture will provide constant over-the-air updates, the ability to exchange information between machines (vehicle-to-vehicle) and receive data from external static objects (vehicle-to-everything), etc.
