Mazda to bring seven-seater CX-80 crossover to Japan in 2023

Mazda

Mazda Motor will add a major new CX-80 model to its crossover line-up, which will go on sale in Japan in 2023. This was reported by the Japanese edition of Spyder7.

In the fall of 2021, Mazda announced the release of five new crossovers, including the seven-seater CX-80. The car will be focused primarily on the Japanese market, where it will become the company's largest model. It is planned to be equipped with Skyactiv-X and Skyactiv-D turbo engines with four and six cylinders. Mazda has been developing in-line sixes for several years.

A "mild" hybrid system was also promised, consisting of a 48-volt motor-generator and a small battery. Such a system is capable of recovering energy to the battery during braking and generating it when starting from a standstill or to maintain the on-board electronics.

It is expected that the CX-80 will be built on a new rear-wheel drive platform with a longitudinal arrangement of the power unit. Mazda is developing it jointly with Toyota.

Recall that in November 2021, Mazda introduced the new compact crossover CX-50. In technical terms, the car largely repeats the CX-5, but differs in design and positioning (it is addressed to lovers of outdoor trips). The CX-50 is made in the USA and sold only in the North American market.
