Volkswagen AG received an offer to sell Lamborghini for €7.5 billion

Lamborghini

Quantum Group AG, a Swiss investment company, wants to buy out the Automobili Lamborghini division (production of supercars) from the Volkswagen concern. Quantum offered the Germans € 7.5 billion. Whether Volkswagen is ready to discuss this proposal is not yet known, writes the British edition of Autocar.

The investment group Quantum Group AG may have an indirect relationship with the Porsche family. In particular, Ree Stark, who represents Quantum, is the co-founder of Piëch Automotive. It was founded in 2019 by Anton Pich, the son of the former (from 1993 to 2002) head of Volkswagen AG Ferdinand Pich and the great-grandson of the legendary engineer and entrepreneur Ferdinand Porsche.

Quantum Group wants to get both the entire production complex in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy, and the rights to the Lamborghini brand. The offer includes a five-year agreement with Audi, which will allow the continuation of the production of current Lamborghini models (they widely use the technology of the German company).

Rumors about the possible sale of the Lamborghini brand have been appearing for several years. In 2020, Reuters announced the intention of Volkswagen AG to get rid of the Italian company in whole or in part (in particular, to conduct an IPO, that is, to issue shares for free float). This allegedly fits into the new strategy of CEO Herbert Diess, who is going to restructure the empire created by Ferdinand Piech. He pursued extensive development and during the 90s he bought many companies, including Bugatti, Bentley, Lamborghini. However, at the end of 2020, the supervisory board of Volkswagen AG voted not to sell Lamborghini, Bentley and Ducati.

Recall that Automobili Lamborghini was bought by Audi AG in 1998.
