Hyundai

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 compact electric crossover won the 2022 World Car of the Year 2022 (WCOTY) award. A jury of 102 judges from 33 countries gave it more points (815) than the Kia EV6 platform (808) and electric SUV Ford Mustang Mach-E (773).

In general, within the framework of WCOTY-2022, Ioniq 5 won simultaneously in three nominations - in addition to the general one, these are “Best Electric Car of the Year” and “Best Design of the Year”.

It is a great honor for the Ioniq 5 to win such a prestigious competition, according to Hyundai Motor President Zhehun Chang, and the award is further proof that the company has invested so much effort and money in creating the E-GMP modular electrical platform, which both Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 5 rely on, and Kia EV6. The E-GMP is an exceptional power base in terms of advanced technology, and the Ioniq 5 also has a cool design and a particularly spacious interior for its class, Chang says.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 is available with rear or all-wheel drive. In the first case, the power is 170 or 218 hp, in the second - 232, 302 or 321 hp. There are three options for traction batteries: with a capacity of 58 (power reserve - 384 km on the WLTP cycle), 72.6 (430-480 km) or 77.4 kWh (412-488 km).

Winners in other categories:

"Luxury Car of the Year" - Mercedes-Benz EQS;
Sports Car of the Year - Audi e-tron GT;
"Electric Car of the Year" - Hyundai Ioniq 5;
City Car of the Year - Toyota Yaris Cross;
"Design of the Year" - Hyundai Ioniq 5.
Note that in all categories, except for the "Urban Car of the Year", the first place went to electric vehicles.

In total, 28 new products of the car market claimed the title of the best car in the world. Cars participating in WCOTY must meet several conditions: an annual output of at least 10,000 units, a price below the level of luxury cars, presence in at least two main markets (China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Latin America, USA) in the period from January 1, 2021 to March 30, 2022.

The competition jury consists of reputable journalists from all over the world, from Russia the judges include Dmitry Barinov (Avtopanorama magazine) and Vitaly Tishchenko (Russian edition of Motor1.com).

Recall that last year the winner in the absolute category was the Volkswagen ID.4 electric crossover.
