General Motors showed the revived Hummer. Now it's electric!

Hummer

General Motors revived the Hummer trade name, but now it is not a separate brand, but a sub-brand of the GMC division. The concern introduced the new generation Hummer - a full-size 1000-horsepower electric pickup truck!

The GMC Hummer EV, as the novelty is called, is built on an all-new BT1 platform, which was originally created for the use of an electric propulsion system and is designed for light trucks and full-size SUVs.

In the design of the electric truck, the corporate style of the Hummers of the past is interpreted in a new way. The body has deliberately brutal proportions, but the outer panels are voluminous with intricate "rhymes" of lines. Since the electric car does not need a radiator grille in the front part, the new Hummer has an LED “composition” instead of it, it combines headlights and six vertical segments, each of which contains the letter of the model name. The segments mimic the traditional slots of the old Hummers.

Cabin - five-seater, four-door, and the roof is removable. By dismantling its elements, you can turn the Hammer into a kind of beach SUV. The platform is short but packed with the MultiPro feature that debuted on the new GMC Sierra. It allows you to expand the tailgate into steps - so that it is convenient to climb into the body (relevant for such a high car).

Inside the car - a simplified "rectangular" architecture of the front panel and trim elements, as well as two hefty displays. 12.3-inch serves as a combination of instruments, and 13.4-inch belongs to the media system. On the second monitor, among other things, you can display data on pitch and roll angles, tire pressure, transmission mode, etc. The machine is equipped with a set of UltraVision cameras, which provide the maximum live view from 18 different points. They are even under the bottom (they will be in demand when driving off-road or while parking).

The car is driven by three electric motors with a total power of 1000 hp. and torque - hold on tight! - 15 592 Nm. Powered by an 800-volt Ultium battery, GM created it in conjunction with Honda Motor: it consists of 24 modules that can work in parallel or in series. In the second case, the battery can be charged for a run of 100 miles (160 km) in just 10 minutes, although this will require the use of a 350 kW fast charging station. The full power reserve of the electric truck is 350 miles, that is, 560 km.

The chassis of the new Hummer is all-wheel drive, fully controlled. The wheels of the front and rear axles turn in opposite directions - this reduces the turning radius. There is also a "crab mode" - when it is activated, all wheels are directed in one direction, which allows the car to move diagonally. "Crab" will be convenient to move out of gentle hills.

Pickup truck suspension - adaptive, pneumatic. The ground clearance can be forcibly raised an additional 6 inches (15 cm). The total amount of ground clearance is not specified.

The wheel arches are designed to accommodate off-road tires up to 37 inches in diameter, but it is expected that most buyers will opt for the 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler (the off-roader's favorite tire).

For a more confident ride on heavy off-road, all vital Hummer units under the bottom are covered with protective screens made of thick tin.

At the same time, the car also has impressive dynamic characteristics. From zero to 60 mph (97 km/h), it can accelerate in just three seconds. But if you turn on the Watts to Freedom mode (maximum output of the motors), the same operation will take less than three seconds.

Sales of the GMC Hummer EV in the US will start in the fall of 2021. At first, the car will be offered only in the Edition 1 special configuration starting at $112,595. Its differences will be a special white body color, a special interior trim and maximum equipment, including a removable roof, Watts to Freedom and CrabWalk modes, as well as an adaptive suspension, 35 -inch tires, a semi-autopilot system, etc. During 2022-2024, more affordable modifications will enter the market, including those with two motors (instead of three). The most “simple” option is planned to be offered for $79,995. The car is already available for pre-order, it requires a deposit of $100.

Later, a purely passenger modification of the Hummer is expected to be released - with a universal body.

Recall that the Hummer brand was created in 1992, when the defense concern AM General decided to make a civilian version of the Humvee army all-terrain vehicle. In 1998, GM bought the rights to the Hummer from AM General in order to produce a whole line of SUVs under it. In addition to the Hummer H1 model based on the original Humvee, GM launched the H2 (full-size) and H3 (mid-size) models on its platforms in the early 2000s. All of them had an angular "masculine" design in the same style. Due to the jump in oil prices in 2008, the demand for Hummers at the end of the 2000s seriously sank. In addition, emissions standards were tightened in the United States, under which GM considered bess mentally adapt the multi-liter engines of the Hummers. In 2010, the division was closed, but the promoted name came in handy 10 years later.
