Citroen has a new flagship - a mixture of sedan, station wagon and crossover

Citroen

Citroen has unveiled the new flagship of its lineup, the mid-size C5X. The novelty is positioned as the ideological successor of the C5 line, discontinued in the second generation back in 2017.

Unlike the old C5, which was produced in the form of a sedan and station wagon, the C5X has only one body modification - the station wagon. True, Citroen marketers characterize the novelty as a mixture of a sedan, station wagon and crossover. From the first type - elegance, from the second - a roomy interior and trunk, from the third - increased ground clearance.

The car is built on the EMP2 platform - the same is based on the mid-size crossover C5 Aircross, produced since 2017. At the same time, the cars do not have common body panels.

The length, width and height of the C5X are 4805, 1865 and 1485 mm, respectively, the wheelbase is 2785 mm, that is, in size this car is comparable to the old C5 generation RD / TD in the station wagon version. Trunk volume new items in the normal state - 545 liters, with the rear seats folded - 1640 liters.

The C5X has a quirky Citroen exterior. The profile is a pronounced two-volume, the plasticity of the panels is intricate, with complex transitions. The radiator grille, headlights and sidelights form an X-shaped composition. The same X motif can be read in the configuration and graphics of the rear lights. In general, the production car has something in common with the silhouette and main decisions of the CXperience show car, which was introduced five years ago - in 2016.

The Citroen press service claims that the C5X has an unrivaled ride - and in this sense is a worthy heir to the classic DS and CX. The suspension of the novelty is hydraulic, it “swallows all the bumps, pits and speed bumps”. The hydraulic system is completely unified with that of the C5 Aircross.

The car will be offered with two petrol engines to choose from, as well as a plug-in hybrid installation. So far, the automaker has only released information about the latest variant - this is the same 225-horsepower system found in the C5 Aircross range. It is equipped with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission, an electric motor installed between them and a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 13.2 kWh. Without an internal combustion engine, the car can accelerate to 135 km / h and travel up to 50 km.

Gasoline engines will obviously also carry over unchanged from the C5 Aircross, meaning 1.2L and 1.6L turbos with 130 and 180bhp are to be expected. respectively.

Front-wheel drive, full is not provided in principle.

Sales of the C5X will start in the European Union in the second half of 2021.
