BMW has unveiled the production version of the XM full-size hybrid crossover.
With its angular exterior, the novelty reproduces the 2021 concept car of the same name - of course, minus the simplifications that are inevitable when the design project is adapted to technological and certification requirements. So, the XM has become less pretentious proportions of elements, exterior door handles, side mirrors and window frames appeared.
It is claimed that the novelty is developed by the motorsports division of BMW M and is its first independent car since 1981, when the BMW M1 mid-engined sports car was discontinued.
In the hierarchy of crossovers of the Bavarian brand, the BMW XM is intended to take the highest step - above the X5 M / X6 M and X7 M60i models.
The XM will only be offered in a plug-in hybrid variant, with the battery plug located in the front left fender.
The hybrid system consists of a new 4.4-litre S68 twin-turbo V8 petrol, a 9-speed automatic transmission with an integrated electric motor and a 25.7 kWh lithium-ion battery. ICE power - 483 hp, torque - 650 Nm, electric motor characteristics - 194 hp. and 280 Nm. The total output reaches 644 hp. and 800 Nm. The car has a full drive.
On pure electric traction, the crossover can travel up to 88 kilometers, but in this mode its top speed is limited to 140 km/h.
In normal condition, the maximum speed of the BMW XM reaches 250 km/h, for a surcharge you can order the option M Driver’s Package, with which the “maximum speed” increases to 270 km/h. Acceleration from standstill to 100 km / h takes 4.3 seconds.
The curb weight of the crossover is 2750 kg, and the weight between the axles is distributed in a 50/50 ratio.
Overall dimensions of new items: length - 5110 mm, width - 2005 mm, height - 1755 mm. Wheelbase - 3105 mm. According to the chassis, the model is widely unified with the X7, but the interior has a five-seat layout (the X7 has a seven-seat one).
The dimension of the front wheels is 275/35 R23, the rear wheels are 315/30 R23.
The production of new items will be organized at the end of 2022 at the BMW plant in South Carolina (USA). The price for the model for the Americans will start at $159,000. In mid-2023, the XM Label Red modification will also be released, which will feature a more productive unit (735 hp and 1000 Nm).
