The BMW Group has bought the rights to the Alpina brand, under which powerful versions of BMW cars are produced. The amount of the transaction is not disclosed.

German tuning studio Alpina was founded in 1965 by Burkard Bovensiepen. Initially, the company was engaged in preparing cars for participation in professional races, including fine-tuning engines. In 1983, Alpina received the official status of a car manufacturer. Since then, she has been building exclusive high-performance road cars based on BMWs.

Alpina employs about 300 people. In 2021, she produced more than 2,000 cars, which was a record in the history of the company.

BMW noted that the future of Alpina's independent existence was under threat due to the transition to electric vehicles and tightening of legal requirements.

After the deal, BMW gets the right to manage the Alpina brand and modify cars independently.

It is important to note that BMW did not buy the company itself, but the rights to the Alpina brand. At the end of 2020, BMW and Alpina extended the cooperation agreement until December 31, 2025, this document remains valid. That is, for several more years, the Bovensiepen company will continue to produce modified cars.

As of January 1, 2026, Alpina will become a BMW sub-brand, and the existing Alpina company will be renamed Bovensiepen in honor of the founder. It will continue to provide engineering services, as well as maintenance and restoration of classic BMW models.

Alpina today offers D3 S and B3 models based on the BMW 3 Series, D5 S and B5 (BMW 5 Series), B7 (BMW 7 Series), B8 (BMW 8 Series), XD3 and XD4 (BMW X3 and X4), XB7 ( BMW X7). They differ from the original BMW models with improvements to the exterior, interior, engine and suspension. Cars are delivered to the European Union, the USA, Japan and the Middle East.
