In honor of the 40th anniversary of the Quattro all-wheel drive, Audi, part of the Volkswagen Group, has unveiled a virtual racing prototype of the Audi RS 6 GTO, based on the RS 6 Avant serial station wagon. Its development was carried out by the design department of the brand, headed by the head of Mark Lichte.
The design project exists only in the form of a three-dimensional computer model, its styling solutions have something in common with the historical racing car 90 Quattro IMSA GTO 1989, which participated in the 1989 IMSA GT circuit races: among the references are the exhaust placed under the side sill, aerodynamic wheel covers, a special livery body. Inside, there are racing carbon fiber seats, multi-point seat belts and a tubular space frame.
Under the hood of the 90 Quattro IMSA GTO car was a 2.2-liter turbo engine with 720 hp, it was paired with a 6-speed "mechanics". Acceleration to 100 km / h took the car 3.1 seconds, the maximum speed was 310 km / h. Probably, if the virtual concept develops into a real sample in the future, it will have even more impressive characteristics.
In the 1989 season, the Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO won 7 out of 13 races, but the series victory went to the then Roush Racing team, who competed in a deeply redesigned Ford Mustang car. Audi fought for leadership in the championship and could have won it, but missed the first two races of the season, because of which they missed important points.
