The American company Tesla will build another car plant - it will be located in Mexico, in the northeast, investments in the project will amount to $ 5 billion. This was announced on February 28 by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador during his daily press conference, writes Forbes Mexico.
“Yesterday we spoke with Senor Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla. There is already an understanding. Yes, they will invest in Mexico and the plant will be built in the city of Monterrey with a number of commitments to solve the problem of water shortages,” Lopez Obrador said.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico Marta Delgado, in an interview with El Milenio, explained that over time, investments in the enterprise could double and reach $10 billion.
The new plant will be Tesla's largest facility and will eventually employ six to ten thousand people. It is expected that it will be able to produce up to a million cars a year, primarily for export to North America. Delgado said she hopes the plant will be built "at lightning speed," as was the case with the Tesla gigafactory in Texas.
The city of Monterrey is located in the state of Nuevo Leon, bordering the United States, in a rather arid region. Investors have to solve a serious problem of lack of water for industrial purposes, because the production of one car takes about 400 liters of water.
Probably, fr om several options, this state was chosen because of its proximity to the Tesla gigafactory in the US state of Texas, which also produces lithium-ion batteries.
Now Tesla has four full-fledged factories for the production of electric vehicles - in California and Texas (USA), Shanghai (China), Grünheide (Germany). Batteries for electric vehicles are produced at Gigafactory 1 in Nevada (USA), Gigafactory 4 in Grünheide (Germany), Gigafactory 5 in Texas (USA). There is also a site in the Netherlands, wh ere electric vehicles are assembled for the European market.
The first rumors about the possible construction of the Tesla plant appeared about a year and a half ago. In October 2022, Elon Musk visited Nuevo Leon, looking at future possessions.
