Renault showed what the Scenic will turn into

Renault

Renault introduced the Scenic Vision concept car - the company demonstrated to them how it is going to reformat the Scenic model. Historically, a compact van was produced under this name, but in the next generation, a compact crossover will receive this name. The upcoming reincarnation of Scenic is due to the fact that minivans are no longer in demand in Europe - more and more consumers are choosing crossovers.

The exterior of the Scenic Vision is made in the latest iteration of Renault's corporate identity - the character in it is set by the intricate interweaving of broken lines. Attract attention complex LED headlights and lanterns and a huge air intake. There are no B-pillars in the body, and the rear doors open against the move, but it is obvious that both of these solutions will remain the prerogative of the show car. The look of the car was created under the leadership of Renault design director Gilles Vidal, who joined the company in 2020 and previously worked as chief designer of Peugeot.

The overall length, width and height of the concept car are 4.49 m, 1.90 m and 1.59 m respectively, the wheelbase is 2.84 m. Apart from the noticeably greater width and wheelbase, the Scenic Vision is comparable in size to recently released serial crossover Renault Austral (it is sold only in the European Union).

The main thing in the concept car is an experimental power plant. The Vision Scenic is a hybrid, but it does not have an internal combustion engine. The machine is equipped with a 160 kW (218 hp) traction electric motor, a 40 kWh battery that feeds it and ... hydrogen fuel cells with a return of 15 kW (22 hp). 2.5 kg of compressed hydrogen is stored in a separate cylinder, it is converted into electricity by an electrochemical reaction in the cells, which recharges the battery, and then the energy is wasted by the traction motor. With a fully charged battery and a fully charged tank, the Scenic Vision can travel up to 800 km at a time. Fuel cells made it possible to install a small and not very heavy battery pack, while providing the car with a long cruising range. An effective system, however, Renault admits that it should be expected in mass production only in the 2030s.

The curb weight of the Renault Scenic Vision is 1700 kg, which is only a little more than that of its weight and size counterparts with internal combustion engines.

In general, this machine is designed with the minimum possible harm to the environment during production and operation. The share of recycled materials in its design is 70%. The so-called carbon footprint of its production is 75% less than conventional electric vehicles. The platinum used in the fuel cells comes from old car catalytic converters. The hydrogen storage cylinder contains waste paper. After a write-off, the car can be 95% recycled (including the battery).

The Scenic Vision will be reincarnated as a production crossover in 2024, but first it will be released as a conventional electric car without fuel cells.

Note that the Scenic minivan has already been discontinued, and in a couple of months its extended seven-seater version of the Grand Scenic will also retire.
