Renault plans to abandon one of its most famous models

The automotive industry has long been on the path to optimization. Companies are reducing the variety of model lines. About a decade ago, three-door hatchbacks began to disappear (suffice it to recall the Ford Focus 3, whose example was followed by the Volkswagen Golf, Audi A3 and many others). Then came the turn of powerful versions like the Ford Focus RS. And soon, manufacturers will begin to abandon even some mass models. One of the first victims could be the Renault Megane.

Megane has been one of the main models of the company since its introduction in 1995. He represents Renault in the mass golf class, which is considered the most sought after in Europe.

As Renault chief designer Laurens van den Acker told the British edition of AutoExpress, Megane faced two problems at once. On the one hand, it is under pressure from the falling demand for golf-class cars, on the other hand, the growing costs of companies to develop electric vehicles.

“Inevitably, as soon as we start adding a number of electric vehicles to our lineup, some other vehicles will have to make room, because we simply cannot afford to develop all this at the same time,” said van Den Acker. Megane belongs to a segment that is under increasing pressure. You should invest your money in the most promising direction.”

Renault Megane sales have been falling since 2010, when 465,732 cars of this series were sold in Europe. Sales have more than halved in a decade, with 209,845 vehicles sold in 2019.
