At the upcoming Paris Motor Show, Infiniti will introduce the VC-T (Variable Compression-Turbocharged), the world's first production engine with a variable compression ratio. According to the company, this is one of the most technologically advanced internal combustion engines in history.
We are talking about a 2.0-liter turbo engine that can smoothly adjust the height of the piston stroke. This changes the engine's displacement and compression ratio, from 8:1 for maximum performance to 14:1 for fuel economy. A sophisticated engine management system automatically applies the optimal ratio depending on the situation.
The motor develops 270 hp. power and up to 390 Nm of thrust. This engine has been reported to have been in development since 1998. In 2018, it will replace the former naturally aspirated 3.5-liter unit in the lineup. The new motor should provide the same smooth ride as the previous volumetric V6, but at the same time it will be much lighter and more economical.
The manufacturer promises to reveal more detailed information about the new technology already at the Paris Motor Show on September 29.
