Honda will release two electric vehicles on the platform of General Motors

Honda Motor will release two mass-produced electric crossovers by 2024, which are built on the Ultium platform from General Motors. The target market for the models will be North America.

Honda and GM announced a manufacturing and technology collaboration on electric vehicles in September 2020. At the same time, for the first time, it was reported that two new models of the Japanese brand would be developed on the American chassis.

One electric crossover will be sold under the Honda brand, the second under the Acura brand, writes The Detroit Bureau.

The GM Ultium platform was introduced in 2020. This is a family of five modules and three motors for GM's new electric vehicles. The ability to vary components within one model will allow the production of cars with any type of drive: front, rear or all-wheel drive. Ultium Drive modules contain electric motors, a single-speed gearbox and control electronics, which makes it easy to create electric vehicles based on them.

GM has already shown a couple of "trains" on the new platform: GMC Hummer and Cadillac Lyriq. Their production is scheduled to start in 2022.

The production of electric Honda and Acura will be established at GM plants.

Honda has been developing green technologies for many years. It already owns an all-electric Honda e compact and sells hybrid versions of the Accord, CR-V and Insight in America. However, without a partnership with GM, the company would have spent billions of dollars developing its platform for large electric vehicles.

Honda and GM first announced a partnership back in 2013. Then it was only about the development of hydrogen-powered cars: Honda, with its Clarity line, is one of the world leaders in this area.
