GMC Explains Why the Hummer EV Electric SUV Was Less Powerful Than the Pickup Truck of the Same Name

General Motors explained the difference in power between the Hummer EV SUV (revealed April 4) and the Hummer EV pickup (revealed in October).

So, the power of electric motors of a pickup truck is 1000 hp, for an SUV - 830 hp. Initially, it was assumed that this situation arose due to the fact that the wheels of the latter simply cannot cope with such a return. However, according to the Motor1 portal, due to the wheelbase reduced by nine inches, GM simply could not fit the same number of batteries and modules in the SUV chassis as in a pickup truck, and free space in the cabin was at risk. But in the future, the performance of cars may be equal - for this it is necessary that the high-voltage battery becomes more compact.

However, this situation is not too worried about the chief engineer of GMC Hummer Al Oppenheiser: “To be honest, we do not regret that there are only 830 horsepower. Not many internal combustion engines can show this.”

Sales of the Hummer EV SUV in North America will start in 2023 at a price of $90,000, in 2024 a cheaper twin-engine version will be released for $80,000. The possibility of the model appearing in other markets is not specified.

Recall that the original Hummer EV pickup should go on sale earlier, in 2022.
