General Motors has named the new 4-cylinder 2.7-liter turbo engine Tripower. In the 1960s, optional V8 engines for several Pontiac models had this designation.
The new turbo engines are designed specifically for GM's full-size pickups: the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. The engine develops 310 hp. power and 472 Nm of torque. Among the technical solutions noted by the manufacturer are an active thermal management system, a two-cylinder shutdown function, intake valve lift adjustment (for the sake of fuel economy) and a BorgWarner twin-scroll turbocharger.
The turbo engine will be paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The place of the “junior” engine in the lineup will now be occupied by a 4.3-liter naturally aspirated V6 developing 285 hp. and 413 Nm.
In addition, buyers will still be able to order Silverado and Sierra with large naturally aspirated V8s. There are two such engines: 5.3 and 6.2 liters (360 hp / 520 Nm and 420 hp / 623 Nm).
As for the name Tripower, GM used this designation before on the most powerful V8 engines of the 1960s. Tripower's distinguishing feature was its three twin-barrel carburetors. In 1966, such a 6.4-liter engine, installed in a Pontiac GTO, developed 360 hp. power and 584 Nm of torque.
