General Motors has issued a recall of 231,000 SUVs due to a fire hazard due to a short circuit in the doors and is advising owners to leave these vehicles out of garages.
The recall is for the 2005-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, SAAB 9-7x, Isuzu Ascender, Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL. The main part is operated in the USA, 3,546 SUVs are registered in Canada, 4,876 in Mexico, and about 30,000 more in other countries.
The listed models have a fire hazard due to a short circuit in the door wiring, where moisture can get in and cause corrosion. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has 28 cases of fire from this cause, six casualties and two cases of property damage.
This is the second massive recall of SUVs for this reason, the first was announced last August and concerned 249,000 Chevrolet Trailblazers in 20 states of the so-called "salt belt" with aggressive atmospheric moisture. Among them are Vermont, Wisconsin, Delaware, Michigan, Minnesota, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and others.
The NHTSA organization has been dealing with the problem of spontaneous combustion of electrical wiring in the doors of GM SUVs since February 2012, in total 167 signals associated with this malfunction have been collected. In addition to the occurrence of an open flame, they concerned the failure of door mechanisms and systems.
